Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare
Congratulations on your Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) procedure.
Proper aftercare is essential to achieving the best possible healing and long-term results from your treatment. Following the guidelines below will help protect the pigment, reduce irritation and support a smooth healing process.
What Is Scalp Micropigmentation?
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical cosmetic tattooing procedure designed to replicate the appearance of natural hair follicles and create the illusion of density or a closely shaved head.
The treatment is performed over multiple sessions, gradually building realistic depth, softness and natural definition.
Why Aftercare Matters
Your scalp will be sensitive following treatment.
Correct aftercare helps:
-
protect the pigment
-
reduce irritation
-
minimise scabbing
-
support proper healing
-
improve long-term retention
Poor aftercare can affect the final healed result and may lead to uneven fading or irritation.
General Aftercare Instructions
Keep The Scalp Dry
For the first 3–5 days:
-
avoid wetting the scalp
-
avoid swimming
-
avoid excessive moisture
-
avoid steam exposure
Keeping the scalp dry allows the pigment to settle properly during the early healing phase.
Avoid Hair Products
Do not apply:
-
hair fibres
-
gels
-
waxes
-
pomades
-
styling products
-
sunscreen
until the scalp has fully healed.
These products may interfere with pigment retention and healing.
Avoid Excessive Sweating
For approximately 5–7 days:
-
avoid intense exercise
-
avoid heavy sweating
-
avoid saunas or steam rooms
Excess moisture and sweat can irritate the treated area during healing.
Do Not Scratch Or Pick
Some light flaking or dryness may occur.
Do not:
-
scratch
-
rub
-
pick scabs or flakes
Removing healing skin prematurely may affect pigment retention.
Sun Protection
Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks following treatment.
Once healed:
-
use SPF protection
-
wear a hat where possible
UV exposure can cause premature fading over time.
First Week Healing Guide
Days 1–3
-
Keep the scalp dry
-
Avoid touching the treated area
-
Avoid exercise and sweating

Rest and allow the scalp to settle naturally
Days 4–7
-
You may begin gently cleansing the scalp using a mild sulfate-free cleanser

Ongoing Care
Once healing is complete:
-
moisturise lightly if dryness occurs
-
continue sun protection
-
maintain scalp hydration
-
avoid harsh scalp treatments immediately after sessions
Follow-Up Sessions
SMP typically requires multiple sessions to achieve optimal density and realism.
Your follow-up appointment allows:
-
refinement
-
layering
-
softening
-
adjustments where needed
Healing between sessions is a normal part of the process.
Monitoring Healing
Mild redness, dryness or tightness can occur during healing.
If you experience:
-
excessive swelling
-
pus
-
severe pain
-
signs of infection
please contact your practitioner or healthcare provider.
